Before I write my first post about education, I would like to give a short snippet of my background. I was raised in a middle-class family in Vermont where education was considered very important. At home, school nights were, well, school nights. This meant homework comes first. No going out with friends. And no TV or playing until homework is done. I am now in my mid-20s. I still see public schools as an important part of "the American dream." Free education for all, equality. And that is about as far as I have really come to understand it. Recently I have, influenced by my work, declared myself to be incompetent about my and others' stories about education. I have never invested time to understand problems in our school system and to work to improve them. I would like this space to be a place to think, and to work with others. Perhaps something interesting will come out of it.
